Why Jennifer Lawrence’s Gender Gap Essay Matters

In this article, Jennifer Lawrence speaks out about the pay gap between her and her fellow male co-stars. Specifically, Bradley Cooper walked away from American Hustle with 9% of the proceeds, while Lawrence was left with only 7%. She stated she didn’t want to seem “difficult” or “spoiled”. In her essay, women who don’t get enough money for being too “nice”, but when they actually want a fair salary, they are regarded as being “difficult”. Lawrence wondered if her inability to negotiate equal pay was from her personality, or because she is a woman. “All I hear and see all day are men speaking their opinions, and I give mine in the same exact manner, and you would have thought I had said something offensive,” she said. The frequently touted statistic that women only make 78 cents for every white man’s dollar only applies to white women. Women of color earn even less with 63 cents to a white male’s dollar. Hispanic women fall to nearly half as much as a white man makes. This is a problem that needs to be addressed.

  1. I think this is a great article, that brings attention to a serious problem. It probably isn’t a surprise that women get paid less than men, but i didn’t really expect that such a popular actress would get so much less. It’s horrible that a woman could do the same amount of work or more and still get paid less just because they’re not a man.
